Earlier this month, Louisville trio Coliseum revealed that they'd figured out the formula to create one near-perfect rock song. They called their new personal best "Fuzzbang", the title alone obviously a dare to mindlessly hit the play button. Far lesser songs have had titles like "Fuzzbang"- tracks that are all power and no substance. It's also the final track on Sister Faith, the band's fourth album in a decade. It's a ridiculously solid way to end an album, and it's also the bow that wraps up the LP's thematic territory. Used Blood" is about the phenomenon of people talking without really listening or saying anything of substance.
Genre: Hardcore Punk.
The album is more than a nostalgic trip to the 1990s though. Coliseum have an uncanny knack for crafting darkly tinged music, and the lyrics penned by frontman Ryan Patterson hit hard with apt existential observations, a trenchant critique of faith, and a wave of tenderness thrown in for good measure. The record often oozes with exquisite songwriting, and thus sees Coliseum perfecting their edgy brand of punk rock in several songs. Fuzzbang almost matches the audacity of Black Magic Punks, but it's a totally different beast altogether.
This used to be what indie rock sounded like. During the 1990s, Elephant 6 and Belle And Sebastian were outliers, and the genre (which really was more genre and less loose lifestyle appellation) hadn’t erased all traces of the get-in-the-van ’80s hardcore that helped birth it. As late as a decade ago, when the Louisville trio Coliseum formed, the term indie evoked images of Pretty Girls Make Graves or Blood Brothers as much as, I don’t know, Beulah, and it was still vaguely novel to hear a flugelhorn on a Sub Pop record.
