Lady Sings the Blues was Billie Holiday’s last album for producer Norman Granz’ Clef Records & Verve Records. The sessions were recorded during 1954 and 1956, and released late in 1956 in conjunction with her autobiography of the same name. Holiday is in top form, backed by many jazz greats including tenor saxophonists Budd Johnson and Paul Quinichette, trumpeters Charlie Shavers and Harry Sweets Edison, pianist Wynton Kelly, and guitarist Kenny Burrell. These autumnal sides bear the frayed vocal moments that brought so much depth to Lady’s late career.

Billie Holiday ( MG C-161) is the third 10 inch LP album of original material by jazz singer Billie Holiday, released on Clef Records in 1954 (her final album would also be given the same title, prior to being changed to Last Recording instead). The recordings took place in 1952 and 1954. Holiday never entered the recording studio in 1953. As for comparing it with earlier Teddy Wilson-Billie sessions, what's the point? Count your blessings in having both. Speaking of time, Billie's beat and variations thereon never cease to be among the seven wonders of jazz.
Billie Holiday: American jazz singer with a career spanning nearly thirty years. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. She was known for her vocal delivery and improvisational skills, which made up for her limited range and lack of formal music education. I Love You, A Fine Romance, Stormy Weather и другие песни.
Billie Holiday's bio-pic was called Lady Sings the Blues, and she had plenty to feel blue about. Billie fronted many big jazz bands but her voice was pure Blues. She continued to record, and her autobiography ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ led to a hugely successful album. In 1956, a series of concerts at Carnegie Hall were recorded on a great live album, including Billie’s own songs ‘Don’t Explain’, ‘I Love My Man’ and ‘Fine and Mellow’, and she toured Europe again making many concert and TV appearances. Billie died in a New York hospital in July 1959, childless, lonely and broke.
