Both are big band dates, and some of the same personnel appear on both: trumpeter Bobby Shew; trombonists Nick DiMaio (the co-producer of 150 MPH), Dana Hughes, and Bob Payne; saxophonists Dick Spencer and Don Menza (who wrote six selections, four on 150 MPH and two on Dynamite); and percussionist/vibes player Jack Arnold. Beyond that, the musical approach is much the same on both albums. Drummer/leader Louie Bellson filled both with originals, most of them written either by himself or Menza, although there is a cover of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Hello Young Lovers" from The.
A fabulous hard swinging Louie Bellson big band album, this set features arrangements by the drummer-leader and Bill Holman. The orchestra boasts such fine soloists as the tenors of Menza and Pete Christlieb, trumpeters Bobby Shew, Conte Candoli, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Blue Mitchell, trombonist Frank Rosolino and either Nat Pierce or Ross Tompkins on piano.
Recordings by Louie Bellson's various big bands tend to be a slight disappointment, full of fire and explosive moments but sometimes lacking in subtlety and surprises. This effort finds the classic drummer at the head of a 14-horn, 19-piece orchestra that is certainly full of power. Bellson, his tenor star Don Menza and altoist Matt Catingub wrote all of the six songs, and among the key soloists are Menza, Catingub, trumpeter Bobby Shew, altoist Dick Spencer and guitarist John Chiodini (featured on "Where Did You Go")
Although the two albums combined on this reissue were recorded five years apart (150 MPH, though not released until 1979, was cut in sessions on May 25 and July 29, 1974, while Dynamite was recorded live at the Concord Jazz Festival in August 1979 and first issued in 1980), they have a lot in common. Bellson's album The Sacred Music of Louie Bellson and the Jazz Ballet appeared in 2006. In May 2009, Francine Bellson told The Jazz Joy and Roy syndicated radio show, "I like to call (Sacred) 'how the Master used two maestros,'" adding, "When (Ellington) did his sacred concert back in 1965 with Louie on drums, he told Louie that the sacred concerts were based on 'in-the-beginning,' the first three words of the bible. As an author, he published more than a dozen books on drums and percussion. He was at work with his biographer on a book chronicling his career and bearing the same name as one of his compositions, "Skin Deep". In addition, "The London Suite" (recorded on his album Louie in London) was performed at the Hollywood Pilgrimage Bowl before a record-breaking audience. The three-part work includes a choral section in which a 12-voice choir sings lyrics penned by Bellson.
