Canteloube: Songs of the Auvergne. No one beats De Los Angeles in this repertoire, but Véronique Gens is certainly not far behind (though very different); in addition, she gives us the complete cycle (over two discs) whereas De Los Angeles cuts out certain numbers (not the strongest ones, admittedly). The music is, of course, pure delight; full of atmosphere, color, charm and variety. In fact, Canteloube seems to have been a composer with a rather personal voice - the style of these songs is in fact rather representative - though we don't often get a chance to hear much other than these songs.
