Aie a Mwana" is the best-known title of a song originally written by the French-Belgian writing and production team of Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger. It was first recorded in 1971 under the title "Aieaoa" on the album Le Monde fabuleux des Yamasuki. In 1975, a version with predominantly Swahili lyrics by Black Blood, an African group recording in Belgium, was released as ". The Swahili version also appeared in a football video game, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011.
Bananarama is the second album released by British girl group Bananarama. Released in 1984, the album peaked at n. 6 on the UK album chart, also reaching the US top 40 album chart and was certified Silver by the BPI. The group continued their association with producers Jolley & Swain (who had produced some tracks on their debut album, Deep Sea Skiving). With this album, Bananarama had their first significant .

Bananarama learned to sing the tune phonetically and brought on Paul Cook as producer. Inspired by the song's tropical vibe, the group nearly called themselves The Pineapple Chunks before settling on Bananarama, taking the "rama" from the Roxy Music song "Pyjamarama. The demo version was issued as a stand-alone single by the independent label Demon Records. It got some airplay on college radio but failed to crack the pop charts. Bananarama got the boost they needed to record their own debut album, Deep Sea Skiving, which featured a polished version of "Aie a Mwana. More songs from Bananarama.
