Over the course of the album, they incorporated various dance techniques that were currently in vogue, including Latin rhythms and house textures. The title isn't entirely an arch joke, however. Like Actually, Introspective was an exploration of distant, disaffected yuppies, which naturally resulted in a good deal of self-analyzation. Nevertheless, the mixes are more compelling than the remixes on Disco, and the songs include several of their best numbers, including "Left to My Own Devices" and "Domino Dancing," as well as the reconstruction of "Always on My Mind" and a cover of Blaze's club classic, "It's Alright.

The title was chosen after considering and dismissing f, Dogmatic, Bounce and Hello!. They reckon Introspective sounds serious, like an art exhibition: Nick Rhodes, said Chris at the time, will be so jealous.

English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys have released 13 studio albums, three live albums, eight compilation albums, four remix albums, three soundtrack albums, two extended plays and 55 singles. The duo's debut single, "West End Girls", was first released in 1984 but failed to chart in most regions.
As Neil Tennant has helpfully pointed out, this album is called Introspective because all its songs are introspective. I was 15, awkward, mistrustful of dance music, adrift from pop. Introspective changed that – it's a collection of extended mixes for songs that mostly weren't yet singles, and these longer versions are the definitive ones. I know now that a lot of this album draws inspiration from years of fabulous, opulent disco mixes. But at 15 it was a beautiful education in what you could do with pop given space and ideas.
Pet Shop Boys embodied a sense of masculine sensitivity, a Jungian world of ideas and concepts rather than things and people, an introverted character and temperament that I identified with. I was also at a difficult age, similarly wanting for strength and joy. And suddenly, here was music that appeared to speak directly to me. What likewise appealed immediately about Introspective was its wholly state-of-the-art aesthetic. The first time I heard Introspective was in a high-end hi-fi shop that my parents used to take me to, in a suburban strip mall before going to the movies. I loved gawking at all those sleek stereos - Bang and Olufsens looked straight out of science fiction - and listening to CDs, which were still new to my ear, and still signaled magic in their complete elimination of the surface noise that accompanied analogue recordings.
