Cowboy Junkies - At The End Of Paths Taken mp3 play

Michael Timmins, chief songwriter and producer/arranger of the Cowboy Junkies, has always written "relationship" songs, though not in the general sense of the word. Timmins has never been satisfied with easy answers. And in the languid, slow, cough syrup delivery of sister Margo to express them, and the band to underscore that performance, he's never had to settle. The music has always gone down gently, though the lyrics to these terse melodies have been complex, often ambivalent or riddled with seemingly paradoxical meanings

On Paths Taken, the Junkies sound like a band battling obsolescence and trying entirely too hard to make an impression as an inventive and therefore relevant band.

Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. But believe me this is one great album they have put out. As is the case with every album they put out the Junkies always look for a new direction to sound and style from their previous album. This time around they have added strings to many of the songs on this record. In some ways I find this album simular to their earlier releases like "Trinity Sessons".

If anyone has the right to make an album about family, it's the Cowboy Junkies. Driven by the brother/sister combo of lead Michael Timmons and vocalist Margo Timmons, the band also boasts a third Timmons, brother Peter, on drums. Since debuting in 1986, and capturing the public eye in 1988 with their languid cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane", the Junkies' sound has grown increasingly thorny. It's an evolution that serves them well here, because, as most people can attest, family is complicated

One example of At the End of Paths Taken showcasing family is by having the Timmins' father narrate a segment from his book on "Mountain". Per No Depression, the album does not have a coherent style, with lilting ballads, junkyard clang, gloomy experimentalism, folk, and hymn-like music. Despite the disparate styles, the album is held together by the distinctive voice of Margo Timmins, and somehow the different styles feed off each other, making the album feel like a full and fated journey. Per exclaim!, the albums theme is of slowly unravelling family ties  . Schneider, Jason (May 23, 2007). Cowboy Junkies - At the End of Paths Taken".
