Saint-Saëns - Piano Concertos 3 & 5 mp3 play

A compilation from five of our finest live piano concertos. Performed by Anna Fedorova and Jean-Yves Thibaudet among others.

22. Saint-Saëns was paradoxical: he was a classicist who admired Liszt and was in turn admired by him. The delightful effort to reconcile Classical concerto forms with splendid virtuoso effects (the composer was one of the great pianists of his day) can be heard in all these pieces, but sample the second movement of the increasingly popular Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major, Op. 103 ("Egyptian"), where a giant, sweeping Lisztian gesture on the piano fills the role of the first theme, while the second theme is a catchy melody Saint-Saëns supposedly heard from boatmen on the Nile.

Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 103 'Egyptian'. The French pianist talks to Katherine about his new recording of the Second and Fifth Piano Concertos and a selection of the composer's lesser-known solo piano works, released on Friday on Erato. Following his award-winning survey of Ravel’s complete solo piano works, Bertrand Chamayou takes on some of the most brilliant yet fiendishly virtuosic music in the French Romantic repertoire on his new Saint-Saëns album, drawing together the two most famous of the composer-pianist’s five piano concertos – the epic N. and the irresistibly exotic N. ‘The Egyptian’ – alongside.

The Piano Concerto No. 103, popularly known as The Egyptian, was Camille Saint-Saëns' last piano concerto. He wrote it in 1896, 20 years after his Fourth Piano Concerto, to play himself at his own Jubilee Concert on May 6 of that year. This concert celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his début at the Salle Pleyel in 1846. This concerto is nicknamed "The Egyptian" for two reasons.

Following his award-winning survey of Ravel’s complete solo piano works, Bertrand Chamayou takes on some of the most brilliant yet fiendishly virtuosic music in the French Romantic repertoire on his new Saint-Saëns album, drawing together the two most famous of the composer-pianist’s five piano concertos – the epic N. a bouquet of lesser-known solo pieces and études that will delight pianophiles. And there’s a real sense of voyage in the music of Saint-Saëns that I find fascinating. He is joined by the Orchestre National de France and its formidable conductor Emmanuel Krivine for an album that promises fireworks, champagne and just a few puffs of opium. Tracklist: Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22 Emmanuel Krivine, Orchestre national de France & Bertrand Chamayou 1 I. Andante sostenuto 2 II. Allegro scherzando 3 III. Presto.

Collectors may well find them preferable to the otherwise fine Thibaudet coupling of the concertos in those ways. Thibaudet offers the Franck Symphonic Variations as his encore which may be a decider for some. One should not overlook the excellent Collard ‘twofer’ of the complete five concertos either which has been vastly improved in the current 1999 remastering. All previous sonic reservations have been addressed and the set makes for an enjoyable and exciting experience.
