Through the Windowpane is the debut full-length album from the British indie rock band Guillemots. It was released on 10 July 2006 in the United Kingdom and reached number 17 in the UK Album Chart. The album was highly anticipated following the strength of the singles "Trains to Brazil" and "Made-Up Lovesong It was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize. The band released the final single from the album, a re-recording of "Annie, Let's Not Wait", on 15 January 2007.

So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that their debut full-length, Through the Windowpane, is a little empty in comparison. Instead of following the lead of the standout EP tracks "Trains to Brazil" and "Made-Up Lovesong (both of which were singles and both of which are among the best cuts on the album), most of the other songs on Through the Windowpane take a slower, more melancholic, and sparser approach, presenting an almost sonically disconcertingly juxtaposition.
On debut album Through the Windowpane- which follows this year's mini-LP From the Cliffs- London-based quartet Guillemots burst from the conventional pop frame with grand gestures, bold strokes, and bright colors, founding their songs upon both Nick Drake's elemental absolutes and the new psychedelia's omnivorous expansiveness. Sometimes I could cry for miles," singer/keyboardist Fyfe Dangerfield warbles over dystopian piano on "Sao Paolo", a 12-minute genre-hopping victory lap that closes the album

Their first album, Through the Windowpane, was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize. The band has experienced some chart success, with their single "Get Over It" reaching number 20 in the UK Singles Chart in March 2008. Their second album, Red, reached number 9 in the UK Albums Chart in the same month. Made-Up Lovesong is a song by Guillemots, from their album, Through the Windowpane. It was released as a single; their first to be chart-eligible, reaching number 23 in the UK Singles Chart. An older version of the song appears on I Saw Such Things in My Sleep EP and From the Cliffs. This song is by Guillemots and appears on the album Through the Windowpane (2006). Woke up with a shoe in my mouthShould I head north or head south? You got me out on the lakeAnd I bank all my dreams on an earthquake. And I felt love Come in through my windowpaneTripping up the high roadTearing down the lowAnd I saw life Chanting out the mantraIf you want it, let it goIf you want it, sow. Words can't express what it meansAnd yes, I believe you Alice.
Through the Windowpane is entirely too much, and that’s entirely the point. Guillemots crafts intense, overwhelming chamber pop-inflected indie rock with sweeping, world-conquering arrangements, over which vocalist Fyfe Dangerfield spends most of his time dialed up to 11. The catch is that, corny as Through the Windowpane can be, it actually makes a great pop record. Dangerfield has both a fantastic melodic sensibility and the conviction to sell just about.
Guillemots are constructing their own universe and inviting interested parties to join them within it. I can’t remember the last time a band did that so effectively and so invitingly.
