Wreck and Reference serve up a slightly different, and more dismal, blend of extreme music styles coming together on this new album of theirs. However, the song structures still leave a lot to be desired.

California duo Wreck and Reference provide a radical vision of what the metal of the future might look like with their latest album, Want. Metal claims to be challenging, but Wreck and Reference go one step further, challenging the genre's practicioners to pull themselves out of complacency. For all of its bluster of rebellion and individuality, metal remains a particularly conservative genre. There are entire labels affiliated with the genre that are dedicated to the idea of preserving the old, signing a glut of bands that, at best, unfavorably smack of the innovators they're so slavishly devoted. So California duo Wreck and Reference provide a radical vision of what the metal of the future might look like with their latest album, Want.
Now, in the wake of Want’s release from captivity, Wreck and Reference give us a peek under the hood of the creative process that shaped the album in the form of Spill/Fill - a compilation of 75 samples that appear in some incarnation in the album’s final cut. Despite the near impossibility of identifying their locations in the proper compositions, listening through the samples proves to be rewarding in its own right as something like an archaeological exercise.
