The Forty Hours Devotion is a special forty-hour period of continuous prayer made before the Blessed Sacrament in solemn exposition  . As Pope Pius XII taught in "Mediator Dei," "This practice of adoration has a valid and firm foundation. The Forty Hours Devotion begins with a Solemn Mass of Exposition, which concludes with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a procession. The Blessed Sacrament remains on the altar in a monstrance. During the next 40 hours, the faithful gather for personal or public prayer in adoration of our Lord.

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domain: Forty Hours' Devotion, in Italian called Quarant'ore or written in one word Quarantore, is a Roman Catholic exercise of devotion in which continuous prayer is made for forty hours before the Blessed Sacrament in solemn exposition. It often occurs in a succession of churches, with one finishing prayers at the same time as the next takes it up.

If you close the door, the night could last forever Leave the sunshine out and say hello to never All the people are dancing and they're having such fun I wish it could happen to me. But if you close the door I'd never have to see the day again. Dark party bars, shiny Cadillac cars And the people on subways and trains Looking gray in the rain as they stand disarrayed Oh, but people look well in the dark. The final track on the Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album, After Hours speaks to nights that don’t end such that one would never have to see the day again.

Lyrics to "40 Hours" song by Howie Day: Lately after dark I've been wandering through the park With the angry words you said Wandering t. .40 hours And counting I could shut my eyes And sleep here. Morning comes and goes And I'm tangle in the throes In the stillness of my room And the bandage on my wound. My heart becomes a bird She set free with just a word And now I'm wishing That I had never met her. The rushes in the veins And there's nothing else to blame But every minute, every hour, Every second. 40 hours And counting I shut my eyes and sleep here Shut my eyes and sleep to dream. Lately after dark I've been wandering thru the park With the angry words you said Wandering through my head.
