Mental Funeral saw the band continue from where they had left off with the 1990 EP Retribution In Blood – whereas Autopsy had previously utilized doomy passages in their songs before, Mental Funeral sees them completely embrace that as both the dominant tempo and mood of the album. There are still faster passages here and there, invoking quite a bit of Celtic Frost influence, but even those moments absolutely drip with the vile atmosphere and feel that is part and parcel of the writing on here. Glad to see you seem to like old Autopsy as much as I do. Crinn - 21 March 2012: CLASSIC!!

Mental Funeral has an extremely raw sound, but there is absolutely zero mud to be found on these serial killer boots. This actually does sound like it was recorded in a basement in the woods between cannibal sprees, not out of some pretentious punk rock ethos, but it's just what you do when you're this fucked in the head. Mental Funeral is a must own for anyone who calls themselves a fan of death metal. It even transcends that sub-genre and is just great metal, but it is certainly not for the faint of heart. After releasing their debut, Autopsy seemed to have reached their prime rather quickly. Proving all wrong with the release of their sophomore album, "Mental Funeral", in 1991. Building on the underlined doom influences of the previous album, Autopsy takes their music in a new and refreshing direction and creating one of the finest doom/death albums out there. Autopsy slowed down and incorporated many influences on this albums, and particularly from Trouble. Discover more music, concerts, videos, and pictures with the largest catalogue online at Last. It’s uncanny just how good Autopsy is at perfecting the thick, murky old-school death metal sound that is rampant throughout Mental Funeral. Its wide array of distorted, down-tuned riffs make a wonderful foundation that the other instruments build on, and it’s slower, more deliberate pace makes for an atmosphere which is both suffocating but also spot-on for the style of death metal that Autopsy plays. It’s really the constant shifting of pace which makes the album so interesting, because the shorter songs pack a punch despite the track length (the opener Twisted Mass Of Burnt Decay being a fine example), while the sheer weight of songs like In The Grip Of Winter play around with a style that is more simplistic but equally heavy, if.
