The Whale is a "dramatic cantata" written by the English composer John Tavener in 1966. The work is loosely based on the biblical allegory of Jonah and the Whale, although Tavener admitted that "The 'fantasy' grew and perhaps at times nearly 'swallowed' the biblical text: so the swallowing of Jonah became almost 'literal' in the biblical sense.

John Tavener (1944-2013) was perhaps Britain's most widely respected and successful contemporary composer, yet he had little to do with the highly conventional world of contemporary classical music. Tavener was brought up in a big, musical North London family. It was a Presbyterian upbringing, and what he enjoyed most as a child was playing the organ for church services and family singsongs. Tavener's contribution to the funeral of Diana the Princess of Wales was Song for Athene, an exquisite short piece originally written after the death of a Greek girl in a road accident and later retitled 'Alleluia. May Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest'. It brought him closer to 'stardom' than he'd ever come before.

Not that the bridging potential of The Whale is the main reason for valuing it highly. The record, if anything even more than the live performances given by the same musicians (David Atherton and the London Sinfonietta with Anna Reynolds, Raimund Heriney and Alvar Lidell), exposes the musical argument more clearly. Certainly the musical argument in The Whale is much thinner than that in, say, a comparable work by Harrison Birtwistle, but the formal balance is cleaner, the ideas more coordinated than I had previously realised. I am still not sure that pop-addicts will go much on a piece that is predominantly slow and in places deliberately static, and even so well-engineered a disc as this can hardly convey the enveloping effect of a live performance, but I look for converts on all sides from it, whether from the direction of Pepper or from Noye’s Fludde.
