Only Life is the third album released by the Feelies. It was released in 1988 with the same line-up that appeared on the band's previous album, The Good Earth. It features a cover of "What Goes On", originally performed by The Velvet Underground. The album was reissued on CD in 2008 by Water Records via Universal Music Special Products. A portion of the song "It's Only Life" would be covered by Mike Doughty as part of a mash-up with Mary J. Blige's song "Real Love" on Doughty's album Skittish.

The album broke little new ground from Only Life but still earned the band critical praise. In March 2011 The Feelies released an album entitled Here Before produced by Bill Million and Glenn Mercer, on the Bar/None record label. The band remains "one of the nation's most beloved alternative-rock bands. The Feelies sixth studio album, In Between, was released in February 2017, also on the Bar-None label.

After the taut, wired focus of the Feelies' brilliant debut, 1980's Crazy Rhythms, and the more open and pastoral sound of their belated second album, 1986's The Good Earth, the group found a semi-comfortable middle ground on their third LP (and major-label debut), 1988's Only Life. Featuring the same revamped lineup that recorded The Good Earth - guitarists Glenn Mercer and Bill Million, bassist Brenda Sauter, percussionist Dave Weckerman, and drummer Stan Demeski - this album rocks decisively harder, but leaves more open space than on Crazy Rhythms.

The wild Feelies beat can be heard clearly, too, on the earlier album's "Away," Mercer's slide guitar surfing cooly on Demeski's brilliantly metronomic snare. A Jonathan Demme-directed video for the song was filmed at Maxwell's in Hoboken, home to Coyote Records, the indie label belonging to club owner Steve Fallon, who'd released 1986's The Good Earth. And while the new studio renderings of Only Life' s wisdom-dispensing title track and 1991's "Find A Way" are fairly exquisite, and the live tracks are good fun, the absence of contemporary supplementary material is a little bit of a bummer.

The Feelies are an American rock band from Haledon, New Jersey. They formed in 1976 and disbanded in 1992 having released four albums. The band reunited in 2008, and most recently released an album in 2011.

The Good Earth (The Feelies album). The Good Earth is the second album by American alternative rock band The Feelies. It was released in 1986 on Coyote Records, six years following their debut album Crazy Rhythms. The original LP was contained in a sleeve designed by Glenn Mercer, featuring a front cover photo of the band by bassist Brenda Sauter and a back cover photo by John Baumgartner with coloring by Sauter.
