Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is a double album by the English–American blues rock band Derek and the Dominos. Released in November 1970, it is best known for its title track, "Layla", and is often regarded as Eric Clapton's greatest musical achievement. The other band members were Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and vocals, Jim Gordon on drums, Carl Radle on bass. Duane Allman played lead and slide guitar on 11 of the 14 songs.

But what really makes Layla such a powerful record is that Clapton, ignoring the traditions that occasionally painted him into a corner, simply tears through these songs with burning, intense emotion. He makes standards like "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and "Nobody Knows You (When You're Down and Out)" into his own, while his collaborations with Bobby Whitlock - including "Any Day" and "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" - teem with passion. And, considering what a personal album Layla is, it's somewhat ironic that the lovely coda "Thorn.

The songs seem more centered around the instruments more than the lyrics, in my opinion. In many of the tracks, there are one to two minute sections where it is just one of the guitarists playing, or playing in conjunction with another band member. The most famous is the second to last song, Layla, and there are others that are known, but the group, despite having many notable members including Eric Clapton, dissolved as the album received tepid.

Eric Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos in 1970, after all of the band members worked together on George Harrison’s first album after the Beatles split, All Things Must Pass. Layla was one of the tracks on their first and widely acclaimed album, Layla and Other Assorted Songs. The song is about the woman he loves: Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s wife, Pattie Boyd. Indeed, it’s one of the notorious ten songs written by three different singer-songwriters who were smitten with Pattie Boyd. Harrison & Boyd later divorced and she and Clapton were married in 1979. The song’s name is inspired by a 12h century Persian poem about a desperate, unreciprocated.

Derek & the Dominos never did put out another studio album - just the live In Concert and later Live at the Fillmore, which overlapped, and featured the quartet without Duane Allman. Got to Get Better In a Little While was, at the time, a featured new song on the live album. I love this album and couldn't wait to get a new 180 gram version. I was very disappointed in the sound quality and bad mix on the first copy I tried.

As the only album recorded by the band, Layla And Other Love Songs stands in history as Clapton’s most definitive milestone, but also as the herald of his fall from grace. This album was the divide between the before and the after in his career, as the downward spiral of his addiction hit rock bottom shortly after the release. Still, during the recordings, the whole band rode a chemical roller-coaster of cocaine and heroin and anything else they could get their hands on, channeling their inner creativity with no holds barred. Towards the end of the album, our fictitious guitar hero Derek gets to address his Layla. On his knees, begging for her love, Clapton bares his soul for the world to see and hear, but with no fucks given. Layla is between him and her, and we are just the crowd of drama vultures gathered to see the spectacle playing out before us in the street.
