For 13 tracks (ten standards and three originals), Ron Affif plays some of the most beautiful solo guitar you will ever hear. He's on nylon six-string acoustic for four numbers, electric guitar for the rest. All feature his patient, measured tones, easygoing but stretching the parameters of many of these quite familiar themes. Missing lyrics by Ron Affif? Know any other songs by Ron Affif?
Past recordings have often found guitarist Ron Affif leaning more toward the athletic side of his playing than the lyrical. On this solo effort, he exhibits an unexpected and welcome reflective and sensitive side. With much of his prodigious technique taken up supplying simultaneous harmony, melody, bass and rhythm, there is apparently less energy for running lines through chord changes. This album is an arched box full of flavors and I haven't been able to get it out of my car cd player since I found it. Affif glides from straight ahead Joe Pass-like playing to a relaxed traditional accoustic sound, to his signature speed demon style The choice of tunes is as tasteful as can be, and he gives fresh meaning to old standards.
Nelson Veras has a new solo album out. It requires attentive listening but the playing is of a very high caliber. I've played this one over and over again thru the years. I also have a few of his other group efforts, although I seem to keep coming back to "Solotude".
