In 1996, Richter collaborated with Future Sound of London on their album Dead Cities, beginning as a pianist, but ultimately working on several tracks, as well as co-writing one track (titled Max). Richter worked with the band for two years, also contributing to the albums The Isness and The Peppermint Tree and Seeds of Superconsciousness. 24 Postcards in Full Colour (2008). Richter released his fourth solo album 24 Postcards in Full Colour, a collection of 24 classically composed miniatures for ringtones, in 2008. The pieces are a series of variations on the basic material, scored for strings, piano, and electronics. Discussing the album with NPR Classical in 2017 Richter stated "People were downloading ringtones at the time and I felt this was a missed opportunity for composers.

Piano Circus plays Mazuzu Dream by former member Max Richter. Originally released on the Piano Circus, Max Richter and Future Sound of London EP. Genre: Classical: Minimalism. Release Date: 1996 out of this world, utterly compelling and technically mind-blowing. In fact, the depth of concentration and understanding involved in performing these highly complex works is nothing short of inspiring. The Press and Journal, October 2009.

Max Richter trained in composition and piano at Edinburgh University, at the Royal Academy of Music, and with Luciano Berioin Florence. On completing his studies, Max co-founded the iconoclastic classical ensemble Piano Circus, where he stayed for ten years,orming works by Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe and Steve Reich. In the late 90s he worked with a number of electronic artists, notably Future Sound of London on their album 'Dead Cities"  .

He worked with electronics in Florence with Luciano Berio and co-founded Piano Circus, an ensemble devoted to work by 20th century composers such as Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt

Max Richter (b. 1966) is a German-born composer, now living in Great Britain. Biography: He trained in composition and piano at University of Edinburgh, the Royal Academy of Music, and with Luciano Berio in Florence. After finishing his studies, Richter co-founded the contemporary classical ensemble Piano Circus, where he stayed for ten years, commissioning and performing works by Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe and Steve Reich. The ensemble was signed to Decca/Argo, producing five CDs. In 1996 he worked with Future Sound of London on their album Dead Cities. He started initially as a pianist but ended up working on several tracks as well as co-writing one track (titled Max). Richter collaborated with this group over a period of two years with the album The Isness. He has also collaborated.

On this, the first release on Piano Circus’s own label, the sextet allow themselves a wide musical remit. The 20-minute CD EP finds them employing their various combinations of pianos and digital keyboards in tackling two African pieces and one from electronica pioneers Future Sound of London. Kumakudo, transcribed from a piece for the mbira (thumb piano), has a cyclical construction with “constantly mutating” inner structures, as the group’s Max Richter puts it. Here he develops on the original, subtly shifting its gorgeous melodies through rhythmic sleight of hand.Future Sound of London were born in the linear techno scene of the late 1980s but have become increasingly keen to employ more complex structures. Richter collaborated on the original version of Glass from FSOL’s 1996 album “Dead Cities”. He questions whether the material can survive the transition to acoustic instruments – which it does, but with the aid of some rather utilitarian rhythm programming. Surely it would have been more interesting to have used exclusively acoustic instruments – as the Balanescu Quartet did on “Possessed” with their brilliant reworking of compositions by 1970s German electronic group Kraftwerk.Mazuzu Dream, dedicated to the memory of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, is the highlight, a piece of Southern African township jive where all six pianos are brought into play. A tolling bass-line and shimmering high notes bring a delightful reinterpretation of jive’s sweet, singing guitar, and the pianists’ rhythmic articulation makes it really swing.
