A Series of Sneaks is the second album released by the band Spoon. It was released in 1998 by Elektra, then re-released with The Agony of Laffitte CD single tracks added on in 2002 by Merge Records. Despite being overlooked critically and commercially upon release, the album has since attained cult status. The music on this album has been compared to that of the Pixies, Wire, Pavement, Archers of Loaf, Gang Of Four, Robert Pollard and The Fall.
With A Series of Sneaks, Spoon became one of the unsung heroes of the guitar-driven post-punk tradition inhabited by bands such as Wire, Gang of Four, Hüsker Dü, and the Pixies. These were the guitar wizards who could package a variety of taut, terse, and inventive guitar sounds and unpredictable melodies into short, tight bursts one could still consider pop songs. But Sneaks wouldn't work if it were merely a repository of all the right influences.
Complete your Spoon collection. This early indie-rawk iteration of Spoon was so great, bristling with raw energy and messy hooks. I always found it interesting how they transformed into such elegant bachelors on their later albums (I like that version too though). This reissue sounds fantastic too.
An essential for any 90's indie maven. A Series of Sneaks was the last album of theirs I purchased, but it is certainly no afterthought; indeed, this record is one of their most essential. After being signed to Elektra Records, they concocted these 14 songs, which advanced their style, staying true to their influences while forging a unique sound as well.

With 'A Series of Sneaks', Spoon became one of the unsung heroes of the guitar-driven post-punk tradition inhabited by bands such as Wire, Gang of Four, Husker Du, and the Pixies. Yes, Spoon's music always sounds that way, but the songs feel like brief bursts of raw guitar rock. Britt Daniel is obviously an underrated guitar genius, twisting his guitar into short, taut blasts; around him, we get the ever-changing duet of Joshua Zarbo's bass and Jim Eno's tight drums, complementing Daniel's guitar work.
