Crawford Marion Gates (December 29, 1921 – June 9, 2018) was an American musician, composer, and conductor known for his contributions to the body of music for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Gates was born in San Francisco, December 29, 1921, and grew up in Palo Alto, California. He started playing piano at age eight and violin at age nine. The program presents works by relatively unknown composers and unknown music by well-known composers and has no commercial purposes.

He studied for his MA from Brigham Young University from 1946 to 1948, studying there with Leroy Robertson. Gates earned his P. from the Eastman School of Music under Howard Hanson in 1954  . In 1987, Gates started composing a new score for Orson Scott Card's new script for the Hill Cumorah Pageant. Gates conducted the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Utah Symphony Orchestra, and Salt Lake Children's choir to make a recording of the new score to use in rehearsals

The Hill Cumorah Pageant is an annual production of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints LDS Church staged at the foot of the Hill Cumorah in P. in the cast of the pageant Osmond played the role of the prophet Samuel the Lamanite. Brent Hanson, a faculty member at Dixie State University, has served as the pageant's artistic director since 2005 During the 2012 season, the pageant held festivities and reunions in commemoration of its 75th anniversary. The New York Times contrasted the pageant's sincerity with the raucous tone of another major production, the satirical Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. As a missionary in the Eastern States Mission, Crawford Gates participated in the Hill Cumorah Pageant in 1941. Although he loved the music and considered it appropriate to the Book of Mormon scenes of the pageant, he thought then that the pageant needed its own tailor-made musical score. Twelve years later he was given the opportunity to create that score. Gates details the challenge of creating a 72-minute musical score for a full symphony orchestra and chorus while working full time as a BYU music faculty member and juggling church and family responsibilities

The Hill Cumorah Pageant is an annual production of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) staged at the foot of the Hill Cumorah in Palmyra, New York, United States. Premiering in 1937, it is considered to be the flagship pageant of the LDS Church. The church has announced the pageant will end in 2020. It depicts Joseph Smith's encounter with the Golden Plates (translated into English as the Book of Mormon), as well as a dramatization of the events recorded therein.
