Seattle's SushiRobo illustrate an interesting contradiction: On the one hand, they seek credibility by crafting an off-center "arty" and "experimental" sound (though this kind of post-punk-lite is no longer an experiment but a firmly entrenched style, and is arty only because it feints at disavowin. SushiRobo often begin with a loop of an unsettling and incoherent noise, which they then domesticate and naturalize into a riff by dropping in the drum track that reveals the latent rhythm. Everything ultimately has that locked-to-the-grid sound of a competent ProTools performance, despite SushiRobo's averred disdain for recording software.
Sushirobo The Light-Fingered Feeling Of Sushirobo. Author: Liz Cordingley. Publish date: Oct 23, 2003. Updated on. May 2, 2018. Spurning all that cheating with software, Seattle's effects-heavy four-piece Sushirobo starts with late '70s art-punk aesthetics, layering modern pop/rock hooks, oddball tones and dub headiness. Frontman Arthur Roberts (ex-Posies) delivers esoteric lyrics in a voice that recalls Soul Coughing's M. Doughty. Though nearly every song has an unconventional structure culled from jam-style recording sessions, the experiment works best when grounded by steady.
Former bass player for the Posies Rick Roberts saw that the Seattle sound was effectively over, picked up a guitar, decided that he was henceforth to be known as Arthur, and worked to realize the prophecies of the ’70s. The band does have contemporaries in Enon and the Dismemberment Plan, but Sushirobo produces all its space-phaser noises and UFO computer beeps with nothing more than guitar, bass and drums.
